Lake of Mentetih Fisheries In Robin Lambert’s Wateraid competition, £1700 was raised by sponsors towards Wateraid, UK Cancer and a South African Orphanages. Some calm weather eventually after the last few weeks of wild westerlies – and a move back to the dries (if it is not too bright) and buzzers. Gus Armour from Cupar and Neilston FF was top rod at Saturday’s Scottish Club Championships heat. St Boswells and Newton finished best team. Runners up were Neilston and Alba. In the Boat League, Ken Oliver and Jim Twaddle were out in the same boat and found the sweet spot in International Bay. They were using Cormorants on a Midge Tip line. Ken was first with 17 fish and receives a £25 voucher from James Baynes Tackle Shop. Second was Brian McKenzie with 15 fish and third was Jim Twaddle with 14 fish. Brian returns to the top of the league.

Frandy (Gleneagles) Andy Anderson and Frank Jackson (Edinburgh) landed 12 for 25lb 8oz and released 23; John Robertson and Gordon Mullen (Auchterarder) 11 fish weighing 24lb 8oz and Steven Brown amd Tim Edwards (Northern Ireland) kept six fish weighing 13lb. Milngavie AC kept 37 fish weighing 83lb 8oz and released nine, Priory of Forth Valley 11 fish for 6lb 2oz, Rannoch and District AC kept 11 fish weighing 26lb 3oz and Tillicoultry AC had 42 fish for 82lb 12oz. All areas of the loch are fishing well and the Kate McLaren, Sedge Muddler, Dabblers, Sedgehogs and Cormorants are included amongst the best catching flies.

Orchill Loch (Braco) There has been a lot of fly life on the water despite the unseasonal weather we have had now for weeks. Most of the time the fish are taking just under the surface. J Methven (Dollar Academy) caught one fish for 2lbs 8oz on a Buzzer; Tom Seaton (Dunblane) two for 5lbs 8oz on a Green and Black lure; Greig Lockhart (Dunblane) three for 10lbs 8oz on a Black and Silver Buzzer; Jim Marshall (Stirling) took two for 8lbs on a Loch Ordie; Bill Dawson (Dollar) had three for 10lbs 8oz on a Mini Cat.

Swanswater Once again the wind was the major factor in determining conditions at Swanswater this week, particularly at the weekend when the more sheltered small ponds fished really well. The water temperature is still sitting at a chilly 11°C and for most of the week the fish were to be found between two and five feet down. At certain times fish were seen rising but were generally pretty elusive on the surface or even just under. The exception to that was on the Meadow Pond where dry flies were working well, especially on Friday evening when they were looking for a fast retrieve causing a wake across the surface. Favourite patterns this week included Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, Nomad, Damsel, Cormorant, Montana and Buzzer. Several cracking brown trout were landed this week, taken from various areas of Swanswater. There were no real hotspots – it was usually a case of anglers finding the most sheltered spots and hoping the fish were nearby! Two of this week’s most successful anglers, both regulars at Swanswater, were at opposite ends of the age spectrum with 84 year-old Willie Martin having a 6lb brown and a 5lb blue in his bag, and 10 year-old Liam Mullin hooking nine on the Meadow Pond. Angling truly is a sport for all ages. Top local catches: Mark Kenyon (Menstrie) fishing from the boat on three consecutive days, landed 19 fish for 53lb and returned another two. Included in his bags were three browns weighing in at 6lb 5oz, 4lb 12oz and 4lb; Willie Martin (Stirling) five for 17lb 12oz including 6lb brown and two blues, bigger one at 5lb; Donald McMurchy (Fallin) five for 12lb 4oz including a blue; Jim Denny (Dunipace) three for 9lb including 4lb 8oz blue; Bob Smith (Stirling) two for 6lb including a tiger.

Glenbervie Fishery It was very windy and wet at fishery making it difficult to get a line out and fish with control. Buzzers accounted for many of trout caught this week with black being the best colour. David Avery caught seven, Jim Wilson caught and released seven including a 7lb rainbow on Buzzers, Hoppers and Beetles, Duncan Taylor, Martin Lindores and Ian Fraser caught five while Stephen Gunn, David Ford and David Halcrow caught and released five, Craig Gibbons and Archie McLaren caught four, Jamie Picken and Craig Fairlie three. The next Glenbervie Fishery competition will be on June 28. They are still few places left. Best patterns have been in this week: Black Beetles, Shipmans Buzzers, Diawl Bach, Foam Daddy Long Legs, Hot Head Damsels and Black Buzzers. Glenbervie Fishery is open every day from eight to dusk.
