Crit back in city as cyclists put to test

- Gareth Jones

Hundreds of cyclists made their way round one of Scotland’s most dramatic routes as Crit Under the Castle returned.

On Sunday, the city centre played host to the Scottish Cycling National Criterium and Youth Road Race Championships as part of the event.

Over 315 of Scotland’s best riders took to the traffic-free streets to compete for the chance to become Scottish National Champion.

The fast-paced 1.18 mile circuit, which was lined with cheering spectators, put even the most experience riders to the test with the cobbled climbs and fast descents, finishing on the Castle Esplanade.

Craig Burn, Scottish Cycling’s chief executive, said: “It was fantastic to see the streets of Stirling lined with cheering spectators supporting our riders on Sunday afternoon. It was a great atmosphere in Stirling, with some great riding on show.

“I would like to congratulate our newly- crowned Scottish Cycling National Champions as well as thanking organiser Norrie Petrie, Stirling Bike Club and Stirling Council for hosting the event as well as all the volunteers, officials and riders who make events like this possible.”

In the Men’s Elite Race, Evan Oliphant added to his win at Crit on the Campus earlier in the year with a win at the Castle. Stirling Bike Club’s Erika Allen beat more experienced racers to win the Elite Women’s Race and there was a one-two-three finish in the U16 girls for Stirling’s Rhona Callander, Amber King and Jenny Holl.
