Tolbooth music
If you fancy a night of Celtic Americana with a rootsy pop groove and a touch of Springsteenesque rock then head to the Tolbooth on Friday (June 19).
Filtering his love of Americana through a gritty yet lyrical Scottish sensibility, and armed with a searingly soulful voice, Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer songwriters, with fans including Bob Harris, Irvine Welsh and Russell Brand.
A compelling and engaging live performer, Dean’s songs draw as much from his Scottish roots, especially his home town of Leith, as from his US heroes. The emotional honesty shines through as he sings about people and places, love and regrets.
The former Felsons front man has released five albums and toured round the world, including with the likes of Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris.
His new album, Into the Sea (released in April) was recorded in Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard, and features guest musicians
Will Kimbrough, Kim Richey and Suzy Bogguss.
The Whisky Hearts Band has a top musical line-up : Dean’s former Felsons bandmate (and long time collaborator) Calais Brown (acoustic and electric guitar/backing vocals), Amy Geddes (fiddle), Jim McDermott (former Simple Minds and Silencers on drums), Sean Pugh (keyboard) and Jack Bruce’s nephew Nico Bruce (bass guitar).
Dean Owens and the Whisky Hearts takes place on Friday ( June 19) at the Tolbooth at 8pm. Tickets are priced £12 and are available from the box office or by ringing 01786274000.
