Doubles Cup is a winner

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

It was fun in the sun at Bridge of Allan Sports Club on Sunday when the first Jamie Murray Doubles Cup came to town.

British no1 doubles player Jamie created the event to encourage more kids to play both doubles and mixed doubles within a team format.

Twelve teams took part from as far afield as Inverness and Prestwick and their coaches acted as on court captains.

Each tie consisted of three matches – boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. Each match lasted 12 minutes and was started and ended on a whistle. Players changed ends after six minutes.

There were several fun rules including “The Joker”, which allowed each team to “cheat” once, “The Replay” which allowed each team to replay a point of their choice and “The SuperSub” whch meant each team could subsititute one player per match for one point only.

There were several off court fun competitions in which teams could earn bonus points such as the waterbomb relay and one legged keepy uppy with racket and ball.

Aberdeen’s Granite City Grinders and Edinburgh’s Capital Letters played off to win flights and tickets to London to watch GB v France in the Davis Cup match at Queens Club as Jamie’s guests - and the winners were Aberdeen.

Two teams from the Central area took part captained by Dunblane’s Michael Welsh and Bridge of Allan’s Ruaridh Fraser.
