Boss Mclaren welcomes Medda defender Staunton

-

Stirling Albion manager Stuart McLaren has made former Irvine Meadow defender Mark Staunton his fifth signing of the summer as the squad prepare to return to pre-season training next week.

The 26 year-old centre-half was unveiled at Forthbank on Monday and takes to 17 the number of players signed up for the forthcoming League 2 campaign, the fixtures for which will be published on Friday.

Staunton began his career as a youngster at Celtic and he had spells with Charlton Athletic and Falkirk, from where he was loaned to Berwick Rangers and Ayr United.

A move to East Fife in 2009 was followed by stints with Beith Juniors and Stranraer before he joined Irvine Meadow two years ago. He helped Medda to second in the table in 2013/14, winning two Player of the Year awards in the process, and enjoyed another good campaign in 2014/15 as the Ayrshire side finished third behind Auchinleck Talbot and Hurlford United.

Last month McLaren signed goalkeeper Chris Smith, defender Ross McMillan and midfield pair Sean Dickson and Jon Paul McGovern and is delighted to have added Staunton to his squad.

The Albion boss, who is still looking to bring in a striker, said: “Mark is a central defender who is adept at covering in either full-back position. He is a real competitor and a terrific reader of the game.”

For his part, Staunton is thrilled to be back in senior football and is determined to help Stirling Albion regain their League One place as soon as possible.

He said: “I enjoyed my time at Meadow and they were keen for me to stay – but the chance to get back in the senior game again was too good to turn down.”

Last week’s Albion Lotto numbers were 2, 7, 14, 35. There were no jackpot winners so the jackpot for today (Wednesday) is £7750. Six players matched three numbers for a share of £250.
