Students at a special school for girls in Stirling held a rooftop protest on Wednesday.

Emergency services rushed to Snowdon School, Spittal Street, after three pupils were reported to be on top of an annexe of the residential school for girls with behavioural issues.

One of the 14-year-olds came down shortly after the incident began but the other two girls spent five hours on the roof and caused some damage.

The incident was resolved peacefully by 6pm, with the girls unharmed. Police said it was unclear what sparked the protest and inquiries are ongoing.

Emergency services rushed to a Stirling school on Wednesday after three pupils staged a rooftop protest.

One of the 14 year-olds came down from the single-storey annexe at the rear of Snowdon School, Spittal Street, a short time later.

But the two others stayed on the roof for five hours before they were persuaded to end the protest.

During the stand-off, the pupils threw slates, causing thousands pounds worth of damage, but no-one was reported injured. The residential school provides accommodation and education for girls aged 12 to 17.

Yesterday (Thursday), no-one there would comment but a Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police responded to an address in Spittal Street, Stirling, following a report of concern for three teenage females.

“Officers were alerted shortly before 1pm on Wednesday, April 20, and upon arrival observed the youths on the roof of a building.

“By 6pm all of the girls had come down from the roof and the incident was resolved peacefully.”

After the alarm was raised , police firefighters and ambulance crews went to the school.

There was a large police presence in the area - with a fire engine and police cars parked within the grounds of the neighbouring Colessio Hotel as officers tackled the emergency.

It is unclear what sparked the protest but police say inquiries into the incident are continuing.

A fire service spokesman said that after being alerted by police they sent two appliances to the scene but one returned to base after the situation was assessed.

“We remained on stand-by in case we were needed but the two females came down of their on accord,” she added.
