U16s Central Schools 7s Tournament On Wednesday, March 30, the McLaren U16 rugby sevens squad competed within Tier 2 of the Central Schools 7s Tournament. The boys were drawn alongside St Modans High, Larbert High ‘B’ and Stirling High, defeating Larbert in their opener 40-0 with tries from Calum Cameron (3), Cameron Burns (2), Stuart Lang (2) and Jamie Nixon. The second match against Stirling was classed as the Tier 2 tournament decider and Stirling led the match 5-0 at half time. McLaren, however, improved in the second half to run out 19-5 winners with tries from Cameron (2) and Nixon plus two conversions from Cameron. McLaren then faced St Modans knowing a victory would secure the Tier 2 tournament and they did so empahtically, winning 35-7 with tries scored by Burns (2), Jamie Tawse, Gregor Aitken and James Isgrove, with the boys successfully converting all of the scores. The boys played some excellent rugby, scoring 16 tries and only conceding two. War Memorial Prize This prize, which is awarded annually at McLaren High, dates back to the period just after the First World War. The aim of the award was to recognise one male and one female pupil from S4 for their service to others in their community and the prize winners’ names are on the boards in the main foyer of the school. During the course of this year, the award has been discussed and how it can “move with the times”. It is felt that the efforts of those who give readily of their time for others should continue to be something that is recognised by the school community. And it has been decided that this award will be open to all pupils, not just those in S4. The school will be encouraging pupils to nominate themselves or their friends for this award but members of the community can also contact the school if there is a young person they feel should be considered for recognition. The PTA has kindly agreed to be involved in the selection process for the winners. You can email Susan Chalmers (PT Support) on chalmerss04s@glow.sch.uk with the details of any pupil you feel should be considered for the award with some information as to why you think they are deserving of consideration. She will then speak to the pupil concerned to ensure they are happy to be considered.
