Family butchers a cut above the competitio­n

A Stirling butchers have been recognised for their outstandin­g and innovative lamb product at a top industry awards.

Willie Kemp Family Butcher on Port Street scooped a silver award for their lamb casserole at the annual Scottish Craft Butcher Awards.

Butchers from across Scotland gathered at the City of Glasgow College for the ceremony where experts judged more than 70 different lamb products.

Boss Willie Kemp said: “We’re absolutely delighted to receive the award. As a craft butcher we’re always trying to come up with new ideas and develop our products.

“I am a butcher but I’m also a trained chef so I try to combine the skills as often as possible. My son Michael is currently working in the shop so we’re all proud to win the award.”

The awards are organised to support the sheep industry and let customers know about craft butchers who have been recognised at a national level for their quality.

And Beaton Lindsay, the President of the Scottish Craft Butchers, insists it’s important to reward butchers who use imaginatio­n and skill to craft new products.

He said: “We run these evaluation­s to recognise the innovation and expertise that goes into the quality products that craft butchers make.

“Customers are becoming increasing­ly interested in sourcing the very best meat products available and our evaluation helps the customer find the good products out there at our specialist butchers.”
