Emergency call issued to quilters

- Donna White

Quilters in the Stirling area are being asked to provide much-needed blankets for children devastated by the earthquakes in Ecuador.

Clare Workman, from Gartmore, is travelling to the stricken country and is calling on knitters and quilters to donate their handiwork.

She said: “It’s a small thing perhaps in the face of all that loss but each quilt may bring hope and comfort to a child.

“I shall be taking as many quilts as I can and I’m so very grateful to all the wonderful quilters for all their support.”

Clare, a tutor who teaches quilting for activity holidays at Gartmore House, is also co-ordinator for the charity Project Linus - named after the cartoon character in Peanuts who is always seen with his comfort blanket.

Throughout Scotland and the UK, caring quilters and knitters make quilts and blankets for children from newborn babies to young adults who are ill, bereaved, or dealing with trauma. Voluntary coordinators work in each region to collect and distribute quilts and blankets to children in need in their area. Clare covers the Trossachs and Stirling region.

She explained: “Project Linus quilts are usually all donated locally, but in this emergency caring quilters have rallied round and are happy to send quilts to the children in Ecuador.

“I have had such a lovely response from local people in Quito, Ecuador, who are so touched that we are reaching out to them like this.”

Project Linus has been given a stand at the Knitting and Stitching Show, running from Thursday to Sunday at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston, Edinburgh. Any donations of quilts or materials would be most gratefully received if you are going along.
