Future golf stars drive off
On the tee from Stirling, Scotland – it’s Borestone Primary.
Primary five pupils from the St Ninians School quickly got in the swing of things at a sun-soaked Stirling Golf Club last week.
Around 30 youngsters enjoyed driving, pitching and putting during a morning of fun organised by Active Stirling as part of the Ryder Cup legacy programme.
A practical session was first on the agenda before the pupils were shown parts of the course before entering the clubhouse for a drink of juice and a special golf quiz.
Angela Hunter is the active schools co-ordinator and she hopes that the golf day can help inspire some youngsters to take up the sport.
She said: “The idea of the legacy programme is to give every nine year-old an experience of golf. It’s also about forming links between the schools and sports clubs.
“All kids that took part were seen a follow-on letter so they have the opportunity to get involved and join as a junior member.
“Everyone seemed to enjoy the morning and the weather certainly helped. Even if they went away from it not wanting to play more, at least they have a better understanding of the sport and what it involves now.
“Members showed them around the club house and they also got to look at some of the greenkeeper’s equipment.
“The grass blower to clean your shoes is always a favourite with the kids, though.”
Class teacher Liz Johnstone insists the kids had a ball of a time learning a new sport at the golf course. She said: “The kids really enjoyed the day and we had a great day for it.”
Pupil Josh Swain added: “It was an amazing experience and everyone was really kind and helpful.”
