Cider bosses put twist on iconic soft drink

New taste in shops

- Robert Fairnie

Stirling alcohol brand Stivvy have launched a new cider as a tribute to one of Scotland’s most iconic drinks.

The new Iron Brew flavoured alcohol drink – described as being “unlike anything else anywhere” – has been produced by Throskbased VC-2 Brands and stocked in shops.

The tipple, which is four per cent in strength, was created in collaboration with supermarket Aldi and can now be seen on their shelves.

Graham Coull is a director at VC-2 Brands and he insists he’s delighted to have the drink out there – with half a million units distributed throughout Scotland.

He explained: “The process started in January and we really wanted to get this on the shelves by summer so we are really pleased to have it out there.

“It’s out fourth flavoured cider and the other three – Cherry Berry, Kola Fruits and Fruit Salad – have done really well so we’re optimistic about this one.

“We try to create retro flavours which take people back to their childhood. The flavour is the most important thing and this is as close as you’re going to get to the Iron Brew taste.

“Creating it was a lot of fun – it involved tasting a number of different recipes to make sure we got the flavour just right.

“It’s not a strong drink but there’s nothing else like it anywhere. It is unique.”

Graham added: “In the future we’d like to get the cider stocked in other supermarkets across the country and behind the bar in pubs.”

Last month we reported that VC-2 Brands, who also own Black Wolf Brewery, are set to benefit from a new state-of-the art bottling and packaging facility.

Graham added: “We’re looking forward to producing and bottling our drinks on the new line.”
