CCTV helped catch thief

- Court reporter

A Stirling security guard stole more than £1000 worth of alcohol while on duty.

Andrew Campbell, 32, thought CCTV was not working when he pilfered 40 bottles of spirit from Barbour European in Stirling’s Craigleith Road on the weekend of November 13, 14 and 15 last year.

The Menzies Drive resident was working evening shifts as a security guard on the days in question and was the only person in the building at the time.

He had been told that the CCTV was not working however this turned out not to be the case.

Fiscal depute Adrian Fraser said: “On November 13 (Friday) he started his shift at 6.30 in the evening.

“At 8.40pm he could be seen on CCTV doing a walk around and stopping at a pallet and box. He could be seen opening the box and taking bottles of spirit.”

The following day, at around 9.50pm, and on the Sunday (November 15) at 9pm, he was again seen opening boxes and selecting bottles of alcohol.

Mr Fraser added: “On the Monday another member of staff returned and saw a lid on one of the boxes propped up so opened the box and saw it was almost completely empty.

“A stock check was carried out and they found that there were 40 bottles of spirit missing with an estimated value of £1069.

“Efforts were made by police to trace the accused but he had moved house. On February 2, 2016, he was traced and cautioned and charged with no recovery.”

Sheriff Wyllie Robertson adjourned proceedings for reports to be carried out on Campbell.

He was ordered to return to court on May 18.
