Deaf boy left all alone in nursery

Children went on Daily Mile

- Gareth Jones

The Care Commission is investigating a complaint that a pupil was left on his own inside his nursery while other children went out for their Daily Mile walk.

Jensen Davidson was locked in a room at Fallin Nursery only weeks after the service was given a glowing report by inspectors.

Mum Andrena has said the incident on March 21 theh four-year-old, who is deaf, very upset.

“He told us that night,” she said. “Jensen is deaf and has only recently been able to communicate effectively with us.

“On the Monday night he said he had gone to the toilet for a long time and said all the other boys and girls, and teachers, had left him.

“He said he was in the room by himself, and we initially thought it couldn’t be right

so asked him again.

“We asked him what had happened, and he said he had been left by himself and then a lady from the baby room had came in and took him out.”

The following day Andrena asked a member of staff if her son had been left alone and she was initially told this wasn’t the case, and that there had been an adult in the room with him.

However a senior member of staff then admitted to Andrena at a meeting that Jensen had been alone, and that the area he was in hadn’t been checked.

“I was told he had been left, and the member of staff that was supposed to check the toilet hadn’t. The pupils had all gone out on their daily walk.

“I was told the person I had spoken to initially had panicked, however it made me even more angry they had lied to me.” The incident happened only a matter of weeks after inspectors had been in, with an excellent report given to the nursery. Inspectors highlighted a number of key strengths including “happy, f riendly children who demonstrate great pleasure in their learning”.

Andrena took her complaint to the Care Inspectorate and said she expects it will be upheld. A spokesman for the watchdog said: “A concern was raised with us about this service and we are investigating this matter.

“We take all concerns raised with us seriously and investigate them fully. If we uphold a complaint the outcome will be published on our website in due course. We have inspected this nursery and a report of that inspection will be published soon.”

Andrena said that Jensen has been more possessive since the incident, and that she is still angry about what happened. Local councillor Alasdair MacPherson said: “I have contacted the head of education to investigate this as a matter of urgency.”
