Butchers lift top awards

- Robert Fairnie

A Blanefield butcher shop made mincemeat of the competition when they landed three top prizes at the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards.

Edenmill Farm Shop was recognised for its innovative lamb products at a glitzy ceremony held at the City of Glasgow College.

Their lamb meatballs and lamb kebab with orange and mint scooped gold awards while the lamb, garlic and rosemary burger was awarded a silver prize.

The farm shop, which also sells beef, pork and venison have enjoyed a busy couple of months having opened a brand new cafe.

And, following the award win, delighted owner Willie Kemp had double the reason to celebrate as his Stirling butchers shop also picked up a prize at the bash.

He said:“We’re absolutely delighted to receive the awards. As a craft butcher we’re always trying to come up with new ideas and develop our products.”

General manager Zsuzsa Pato was on hand to collect the awards and she spoke of her pride that Edenmill’s produce stood out among more than 70 lamb items judged by experts.

She said:“I am over the moon with the awards. We are really proud that out of three entries we won three awards.

“The judges tasted the products beforehand so I was always hoping for a good result. Everyone who tries the products love them. Whenever we do tasters in the cafe people always end up buying.

“Willie [Kemp] has these recipes and he is very adventurous. It’s all about taking a classic dish to a different level.”

Beaton Lindsay, President of the Scottish Craft Butchers, said:“We run these evaluations to recognise the innovation and expertise that goes into the quality products that craft butchers make.

“Customers are becoming increasingly interested in sourcing the very best meat products available and our evaluation aids the customer finding all the good products out there at our specialist butchers.”
