Sign up for Race for Life

-

Organisers are urging women to sign up for the Race for Life in Stirling.

There is just under two weeks left to register for the 5k event in aid of Cancer Research UK which takes place on May 15 at the Gannochy Sports Centre at Stirling University.

It is hoped this year’s number will surpass the 1,333 entries last year, when a whopping £73,315 was raised as part of the total £2.3 million raised across Scotland at Race for Life events.

This year organisers are appealing for even more women and girls to join in, with Scotland’s first Race for Life event kicking off in Stirling.

Angela Wilson, event manager for Race for Life Stirling, said: “We are absolutely thrilled so many women have entered. But we still have places left so we’re urging anyone who has been thinking about it to commit and take action today.

“Taking part in Race for Life, alongside thousands of like minded women, is incredibly motivating. The atmosphere at all the events is full of emotion as participants wear signs on their backs declaring their reasons for taking part.

“Many will be remembering loved ones lost to cancer or celebrating the lives of people dear to them who have survived.”

Every hour, around three people are diagnosed with cancer in Scotland and the number of people being diagnosed has now reached around 30,200 cases each year.

But the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before.

Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s, but more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Cancer Research UK spends around £31 million a year in Scotland.
