Balfron collect eggs for

A 21-year-old Aberfoyle soldier was reported missing in Flanders, according to the Observer.

Pte Matthew Shaw, A&SH, was previously employed by Messrs Arthur & Co, and before that with the Post office.

In Balfron over the previous two weeks, 298 eggs had been collected for wounded soldiers by the Junior Guild. And a collection of literature for soldiers by junior members of the Red Cross had also been a great success. No fewer than 784 volumes had been collected in addition to 50 scriptures. The material was sent to Stobhill Hospital and the Camps Library. looking fit and well, said the paper. It was also noted that members of Scottish Horse had past through Dunblane on their way to the Front. Among them were local men Sgt Major Phillips and Trooper P Young, both of whom had been invalided home from the Dardanelle­s.

A `chum’ writing home, revealed that Pte Archibald McLellan, Seaforth Highlander­s, was in hospital having suffered a head wound which was not considered serious. He was son of Mr Angus McLellan, 25 St John Street, Stirling, and before enlistment was employed on the Government telephones. He was a well-known junior footballer.

A total of 156 former pupils of Holy Trinity Episcopal School, Stirling, were serving King and Country. And they had 94 pupils whose fathers were serving their country. The youngsters had received gifts of free school books from Stirling School Board.
