Experience Shakespeare at the Globe on screen

- Gareth Jones

Live performances from the renowned Shakespeare’s Globe will be screened in Stirling to mark 400 years since the Bard’s death.

To mark the milestone anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, three acclaimed performances from the world’s most famous stage will put cinema-goers at the Macrobert right at the heart of the action.

The wickedly black comedy of sexual politics and identity Measure For Measure (on May 8 and 11), multi Tony and Olivier Award-winner Jonathan Pryce in The Merchant of Venice (June 12 and 15) and historical masterpiece Richard II ( June 26 and 28) will all be screened live.

With each sell-out performance captured in exceptional high definition and with full surround sound, Globe On Screen audiences will be transported from their local cinema directly into the standing yard of one of the world’s most unique theatres.

Launching the sixth annual season of the hugely popular Globe On Screen is one of the Bard’s lesser-known works Measure For Measure.

Boasting a superb cast and marking the final summer production from artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, the play is a black comedy of secret identities, sexual politics and manipulation. The production features stellar performances from Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincent and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.

Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce takes the role of enigmatic Shylock alongside his daughter Phoebe Pryce, playing Jessica, in Jonathan Munby’s moving production of The Merchant of Venice. This iconic tale of the battle between greed and love, paired with Pryce’s memorable interpretation, makes this a must-see.

Simmering with violence and comedic irony, Simon Godwin’s Richard II features a tour de force performance from Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey, Philomena) in the title role.

Delving into the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it, this historical masterpiece transfer superbly to the big screen.
