DOUBLE TOPS!

Castle clinch Caley title with late strike

- Sports reporter

Gartcosh Utd ......1 Doune Castle .....2 Supersub Dylan McGowan came off the bench to net the winner as Doune captured the Caledonian League Premier Division crown for the second successive season.

Doune went into the game knowing that a win would make them champions and they got off to a flier, netting after only 45 seconds with a great goal when Lukasz Duszynski set up Sean Heaver whose cross was turned in by Paul Statter for his first Doune goal.

The home side hit back and they equalised in 18 minutes.

Doune conceded a soft free kick 25 yards out and the cross was headed into the net from 12 yards to make it 1-1.

Steven Fotheringham prevented Gartcosh taking the lead, diving to his left to parry a fierce first-time strike from 14 yards as both sides battled for the winner.

And after 87 minutes, McGowan became the hero of the hour.

Jonny Burns drove the ball into the box and past two defenders McGowan prodded the ball high into the Gartcosh net from eight yards to make it 2-1.

The referee signalled the end of the game to trigger wild celebrations from a Castle side that deserves great credit for this fine win and even more impressive form throughout the League campaign.

The league win was set up days after a tough 1-0 home victory over Strathclyde University.

Sean Heaver scored after only six minutes and although Castle pounded the students’ defence, there were no more goals.
