GRAND OPENING

Young thrill seekers flock to new skate park

- Robert Fairnie

A bumper crowd turned out for the grand opening of a new skate park in Cowie at the weekend.

Youngsters grabbed their boards and flocked to the town’s new facility where they could enjoy a bouncy castle, refreshments and a skate on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon.

Cowie Rural Action Group (CRAG) have worked tirelessly to bring the park, which cost £243,800, to Cowie for three years.

Construction began on the project in the autumn and Clare Stevenson, CRAG chairperson, insists all the hard work has paid off.

She said: “The opening was brilliant. We had around 120 kids there and the weather stayed nice.

“There was huge excitement among the young people as they have been looking forward to this.

“The reviews we’ve had since have all been really positive and a lot of people, of a variety of ages, have been using it. It was very popular on the bank holiday Monday – it certainly gave everyone somewhere to go. “We’re all really pleased with it.” Campaigners have been fighting to improve facilities for young people in the area, and the skate park should go a long way to achieving that goal.

CRAG managed to raise the bumper sum of £243,800 through a combination of a Community Spaces Grant and their own sterling fundraising efforts.

Clare continued: “We have long needed something for the young people who don’t necessarily like football. Football is popular in the area but not everyone likes it.

“As a result, we asked them what they would like and a skate park seemed popular.

“We’re absolutely delighted that it’s now up and running.

“Now we’re just waiting on some floodlights being brought in and we’re hoping to have a graffiti artist along soon too.”
