The fight to win the coveted Bridge of Allan Sports Club’s Squash Player of the Year will be between three of the club’s stars.

A memorable season saw the Minewood club sweep all before them in their first campaign in the East of Scotland Squash Leagues as they won the second and fourth division titles.

Climax of the seaason for Bridge of Allan’s players year comes on Friday, May 13 when the club championship finals are played and both the Player of the Year and Young Player of The Year announced.

Roddy Campbell and Iain Logan have been nominated from the first team while Martin Jack has been proposed from the seconds.

First team captain Robin Bairner said his two top team stalwarts should be seen as the front runners. “Both Roddy and Ian have remained unbeaten throughout our league campaign and that is no mean feat given the quality of opposition they have faced.

“Both players have also alternated with Scott Mosely at number one and lead by example and their consistency has been remarkable. Their contributions have played a huge part in taking us to the title.”

However second team skipper Bert Mitchell was keen to advance the case of Martin Jack: “Not only has Martin remained unbeaten throughout our campaign but he also had to skipper the side for most of the second half of the season due to my injury problems.

“I think that without Martin’s contribution both on and off the court we would have struggled badly to complete the campaign without suffering one single defeat and recording an invincible season.

“He has also done a lot to help the likes of James Dougan, Emma Fitzsimmons, Robbie Harper and Keir Mackenzie develop and has always been on hand with advice and encouragement.

“The judging panel have a tough decision on their hands.”

The contest to decide the Young Player of the Year at Minewood Pavilion is a race between James Dougan, Emma Fitzsimmons, Keir Mackenzie and Robbie Harper.

The club championships reach the semi-final stage tomorrow (Thursday) with top seed Scott Mosely facing Iain Logan and Roddy Campbell facing Andy Meldrum in the Men’s Open.

In the Ladies Open, No 1 seed and Scottish Ladies over-45 champion Sabine Mackenzie faces Maureen Carroll while in the other semi Debbie Gillespie meets Karen Robertson.
