New shelters are boost for school

Bike facilities help get youngsters out on two wheels

-

Strathblane Primary pupils who have been pedaling their way to school are taking advantage of two brand new bike shelters.

Youngsters are being urged to get on their bike before lessons and the school’s new additions are geared towards help encourage this.

Staff and budding young cyclists ditched their jotters and textbooks and stepped out for the shelters’ grand opening last Friday where the kids were taught about the benefits of biking their way to class.

The new facilities were funded thanks to grants from SUSTRANS and the Co-Operative teacher Jennifer Alexander is delighted with the difference they already seem to be making.

She said:“The shelters are full of bikes at the moment.

“The kids are using them and we are delighted we have them in place now.

“There are a lot of good cycle routes around the village and, as we’re trying to educate the children about the benefits of cycling to school, we’re seeing a real difference.

“Every child that has been cycling to school throughout the week received an ‘I cycled to school’ sticker.

“We have been recording the number of children cycling or scooting to school and before and after the installation of these shelters and, so far, the number of children cycling has increased significantly.”
