Farming brothers dubbed ‘heroes’

-

Two brothers who stepped in to take over the family’s farm after the sudden death of their father have been dubbed heroes.

Cameron and Duncan Henry, from Balquhidder, were named as the winners of the‘young hero’ category at the eleventh annual Young Scot Awards 2016.

When the boys’dad, Dave, died of a heart attack on Christmas day in 2014, Cameron quit school and postponed his dreams of college and travelling the world to take on the running of the family hill farm.

Within hours of his father’s death, the teenager was tending to the animals, determined not to let mum Marianne and his younger brother lose the livelihood their beloved dad had worked so hard to build up.

Cameron has been running the family farm for more than a year now and has earned the respect and praise of farmers in the district and beyond.

And the resilient 18-year-old couldn’t have done it all without the help of Duncan, 17, who is still at school and hoping to become a vet.

Cameron said:“This award is really unexpected.

“The other nominees are so strong and it is an honour to sit alongside them. We are glad we managed to push through and now have something to show for it.”

The event, which was held in Edinburgh last week, celebrates the passion, hard work and dedication shown by young people aged 11 to 26 in Scotland and the positive impact they make to their communities every day.
