I’m going to give it my personal best
Duncan Scott is the youngest of the Stirling swimmers who is heading to Rio.
But the Wee County boy’s selection is perhaps a natural progression of his development over the last two years.
The 18-year-old won gold as part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team at the Summer Youth Olympic in 2014, and then followed this up with three golds and three silvers at last year’s European Games in Baku.
“If you said to me two years ago that I would have made it to Rio I’d have said no,” said Duncan, who went to school in Alloa.
“But I have been improving consistently and last year I felt like it became a possibility and thought that this could happen. This was my first Olympic Trials. Last time I watched it and thought it was a big event because it was a home games and the atmosphere was great.
“But taking part, it didn’t really feel like a trials for the Olympic Games, and I was quite relaxed.”
Duncan scooped first place in the 100m freestyle, securing a new Scottish Record in the process and his impressive performance played a key in selection.
He said: “The second the team was announced I was with my coach,Steve Tigg.
“We spoke about the Games and he said you can either go there and enjoy it and have fun, or you can go and try and get a personal best and do the best you can - that’s what I’m going to do.”
