Warnings and fines for drivers

- Robert Fairnie

More than 120 motorists were stopped at the weekend during a roads policing operation on rural Stirlingshire’s accident hot-spots.

The patrols focused on the A84/A85/A82 corridor and the A811/A809 Stockiemuir Road.

This resulted in two drivers being reported for speeding at 54mph and 52mph respectively in 30mph speed limit.

Forty-three fixed penalty fines were issued for speeding and 57 warnings were handed out for the same offence.

Two cars with no insurance were seized and another driver was fined for not having undertaken an MOT.

One driver was also given a fixed penalty notice for use of a mobile phone while driving and eight drivers received vehicle defect forms. Five drivers were also found to have no vehicle tax on their cars.

A total of 29 drivers and motorcycle riders were found to be speeding by Safety Camera Partnership.

Police Sergeant Adam Weir of the Forth Valley Trunk Road Patrol Group said:“Our aim is to encourage and promote road safety on our roads in an effort to reduce collisions and resultant casualties.

“We will however continue to use all means at our disposal to deal with inappropriate or dangerous behaviour by all road users.”

Callander-based inspector Gerry McMenemy said:“A total of 100 people were found by officers to be speeding and this is a significant number.

“We will continue to focus on routes where people have been injured or even killed in the past. Speed is a factor in a lot of the accidents we deal with.

“If people drive at a speed which is safe for the conditions and within the legal limit it will save lives in the long-term.”
