Youngsters will enjoy dipping into Pondlife

- Gareth Jones

A fun show for children is coming to the Macrobert on October 23 and 24.

Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Scotland’s most prolific producer of new and engaging work for young audiences, are re-working one of their most successful shows Pondlife to tour Scottish venue this autumn.

The energetic one-man show for ages nine plus has toured the world since premiering in Scottish schools in 2008, playing at some of iconic international venues including the Sydney Opera House and the New Victory Theatre, New York.

This month the show returns to Scotland for first-time since 2012.

The piece, which follows Martin as he starts a new school and navigates the complicated world of playground politics, was first conceived in 2008 as a show to tour Scottish schools.

Students sat on the floor as the story was performed around them, with a minimal set. This simple, stripped back aesthetic was then replicated as the show went on to visit studio spaces in Edinburgh and around the world.

This tour will see the show playing to much bigger audiences than it has done previously and Catherine Wheels artistic director Gill Robertson has been working with a design team, including composer Danny Krass, set designer Karen Tennent (who frequently works on Macrobert’s Christmas pantomimes) and lighting designer Simon Wilkinson to add a new dimension to the story.

She said: “Pondlife has already had a wonderful journey and we are thrilled to now be taking it to larger venues, meaning more people can access it. We’ve been working on reimagining the design, developing a full set and exciting lighting to create a really great theatrical experience”

Pondlife is sure to evoke classroom memories for many audiences, as this passionate and energetic one man show, performed by Antony Strachan, vividly brings to life Martin’s story of childhood friendship and classroom bullies.
