Broons are in toon

- Gareth Jones

Scotland’s favourite family are in Stirling this week.

The Broons are at the Macrobert Arts Centre from Thursday (October 13) until Saturday, in a World Premiere stage adaptation which has been created by Rob Drummond.

The Glebe Street gang have featured in DC Thomson comic strips in the Sunday Post since 1936 and this production celebrates them in their 80th anniversary year.

The award-winning Scottish playwright brings the iconic characters Granpaw, Paw and Maw Broon, Hen and Joe, Daphne, Maggie, Horace, the Twins and the Bairn to life audience in a production filled with laughs, love and comicstrip visuals, all set to a Scottish soundtrack.

This world first theatrical staging draws inspiration from the famous comic strip to bring you a brand new lively and fast paced tale. Can Maggie really, finally be getting married?! Return to Glebe Street, the But an’ Ben, and of course the Kirk to find out. The marvellous artwork and storylines mean that everyone recognises a little of themselves in these classic tales and their much-loved characters.

David Hutchinson, artistic director of Sell a Door Theatre Company, said: “We’ve been discussing bringing The Broons to the stage for a while, and have been waiting for the right playwright and timing.

“The Broons are more than just a cherished family, they are a national institution that have stood the test of time and struck a chord with generation after generation inside and outside of Scotland.

“Rob Drummond’s new stage play is going to be a theatrical experience to remember, paying homage to the decades of excellent comic writing - whilst also presenting a brand new theatrical chapter for this timeless Scottish family.”

The cast will feature Kern Falconer as Granpaw, Paul Riley as Paw, Joyce Falconer as Maw, Tyler Colins as Hen, John Kielty as Joe, Laura Szalecki as Daphne, Kim Allan as Maggie, Euan Bennet as Horace, Kevin Lennon and Duncan Brown as The Twins, and Maureen Carr as the Bairn.
