CORRIGAN KEEPS HIS FOCUS ON FOOTBALL

Stirling Albion caretaker boss Martyn Corrigan insists his full focus is on Saturday’s home game with Berwick Rangers.

Corrigan took the team for the 2-0 win at Cowdenbeath two weeks ago following the departure of Stuart McLaren and remains in charge after James Fowler turned down the post to take up a role as assistant to Jack Ross at St Mirren.

McLaren’s former No 2, who was previously manager at Stenhousemuir, would appear to be a strong contender to take the job on a permanent basis if results go well in forthcoming games.

Corrigan said: “I wouldn’t want to rule anything out because I have a soft spot for the club and we had good backing from the board and the supporters over the last two years.

“I want to help the club but all I’m thinking about is Saturday’s game against Berwick. I’ve felt I’ve had a good reaction from the players and it’s important we are solid and hard to beat.

“Defenders sometimes get the blame when goals are conceded but it’s about how we set up as a team.

“We had a clean sheet against Cowdenbeath and another one in a bounce game with Stenhousemuir last Thursday and we want to keep that going.

“Berwick will be a difficult game but the players know they have underperformed this season and they want to put that right. Training has been good and if we can get a win on Saturday it would put us back in the mix despite a poor start to the season.”

Albion are four points behind fourthplaced Berwick, who drew 1-1 with Clyde in their last outing but will be without the suspended Michael McKenna.

Shielfield boss John Coughlin could include former Binos Kevin McKinlay and Lee Hamilton for the first Forthbank meeting between the teams since Stirling won 2-1 in February thanks to goals from Ross Smith and Sean Dickson (penalty).

Winger Moses Olanrewaju is likely to be fit to return after the ankle injury he suffered against leaders Forfar last month proved to be less serious than first feared, but left-back Ross Forsyth remains sidelined with a knee injury and midfielder Bryan Hodge is doubtful (groin). SEE PAGE 55

Meanwhile, Stirling Albion have announced that Frenchman Aurelien Mazel has decided to retire from football after an injury-plagued start to 2016/17.

Mazel, who made his debut against Montrose in September 2015, chalked up 26 league appearances last season in both defence and midfield and signed a new deal in the summer.

However, the 33 year-old former Toulouse, Chateauroux and Colomiers player has only managed one outing this term – as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Edinburgh City on September 10.

The referee for tomorrow’s game is Mike Taylor. Admission prices are £13 for adults, £9 for seniors and students, £5 for U16s and free for U12s.

●Ross Kavanagh scored twice for Stirling Albion’s U20 side as they drew 2-2 with Raith Rovers in the SPFL Development League East on the Forthbank plastic on Tuesday. The next match for the SAFC youngsters is away to Livingston on Monday, October 17, kickoff 7.45pm at Almondvale.
