Driver sped recklessly through a Callander street full of schoolkids
A reckless motorist who drove through Callander at speeds of up to 100mph while the area was busy with schoolchildren is being hunted by police.
A man driving a burgundy Volkswagen Passat sped along Mollands Road, close to McLaren High and Callander Primary. The car then continued on to Main Street and Stirling Road towards Doune at around 4pm on Tuesday. The car, which was travelling on roads with a 30mph limit, was spotted by police vehicles at the time of the incident but, when signalled to stop, the driver raced off and was quickly lost from sight. Officers later found the vehicle abandoned off the A84 to Doune. Although the vehicle is not reported stolen, it has no registered owner.
A hunt is now on to trace the male driver with police keen to speak to anyone who was travelling in the area at this time and may have recorded the incident on a dashboard camera.
Callander-based Inspector Gerry
McMenemy said:“We are appealing for anyone who saw this vehicle, can identify the driver or who may have helpful dashcam footage to come forward.
“It is absolutely irresponsible and extremely dangerous to drive at these speeds.“The streets were busy with pedestrians and school children at this time.”
Sergeant Adrian Robertson added:“There were numerous children in the area at the time of this incident along with a high flow of traffic. It is unacceptable that this driver thought to drive in this manner and we are eager to trace him as soon as possible and hold him to account.
“I ask anyone with information to get in touch with us immediately.”
Martin Earl, Trossachs and Teith councillor and Convener of the Council’s Public Safety Committee, also condemned the reckless actions of the driver.
He said:“It is appalling that anyone could behave with such total disregard and it makes me shudder to think what could have happened, especially as it coincided with the end of the school day.
“This was dangerous and reckless behaviour of the worst kind that could have all too easily have ended in tragedy.
“Let us hope the individual is identified quickly and appropriate charges brought.”
Anyone with information which could lead to the identification of the driver should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
