NHS Forth Valley has appointed a former consultant surgeon Andrew Murray as its new medical director.

Mr Murray is currently medical director at NHS Borders – a post he only took up in April of this year.

He will begin his new job at NHS Forth Valley in February, 2017.

He graduated from Glasgow University in 1988 and worked in Scotland and New Zealand until 2001, when he moved to NHS Ayrshire and Arran as a consultant ENT surgeon, clinical director then associate medical director before taking up his current post with NHS Borders.

NHS FV chief executive Jane Grant said: “As well as being an experienced clinician, he has a strong track record in medical leadership and management. I am looking forward to working with him to drive forward further healthcare improvements across Forth Valley.”

Mr Murray is a founding member of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and has led the redesign of a wide range of medical services. He has also developed and implemented new models of care across community and acute hospitals.

He said:“I am very much looking forward to my new role and to meeting and working with staff to further improve the quality and safety of patient care.”

Mr Murray will replace Tracey Gillies who takes up her new post as NHS Lothian medical director in February.
