Pupils Meet Tim Peake A small group of pupils travelled to the University of York recently to take part in the Principia Schools’Conference. Organised by the UK Space Agency, the conference celebrated and reported on the many different educational activities and projects carried out in schools across the UK in support of ESA astronaut Tim Peake’s Principia mission to the International Space Station. Stirling High was one of only two secondary schools from Scotland at the conference. The six pupils from across the year groups had all taken part in Principia events. Keynote speaker and guest of honour was Tim Peake, who gave a wonderful insight to his six month stay on the ISS. He then took the time to meet with every one of the 400 delegates at the conference to shake hands and patiently answer many questions. He had a special word of thanks to the Stirling High School pupils for coming such a long way to support him. Spanish visit On November 15, pupils who study Spanish enjoyed a visit from 19 students and three teachers from Colegio Kostka, Catabria, Santander Northern Spain. The Spanish guests were welcomed by head teacher Paul Cassidy and the Modern Languages faculty. The visit organised by faculty teachers Mandy McMillan and Amy Lochhead was a huge success. Firm friendships were established. It’s hoped one day, our pupils will enjoy a visit to their school in Northern Spain. Tempori Parendum ‘Be Prepared For Your Time’. The children had the chance to explore and understand how animals use their senses within their habitats. They also began to learn how some animals perceive their surroundings differently to us and even got the chance to handle or touch some real animals. The animals they saw included a hissing cockroach, baby tortoise, tarantula, Columbian Rainbow Boa, bearded dragon and a poisonous dart frog. The children all showed great respect towards the animals and enjoyed feeling their different textures during the experience. Their teachers Miss Hargreaves and Miss Coey even got to hold the snake. Remembrance Sunday Beaconhurst School Authority and some of the prefects attended last Sunday’s Remembrance service in Bridge of Allan’s Memorial Park. They were proud to lay a wreath at the War Memorial and also to see so many of the school’s pupils representing other community groups including air cadets, scouts, guides, cubs and brownies. Despite the weather it was a wonderful service.
