Failed thief stalls buggy on film set

Chancer tries to steal vehicle

- Robert Fairnie

A hapless would-be thief was thwarted in his attempts to steal an adapted dune buggy being used by film crews working on a top secret film at Mugdock Country Park.

The chancer jumped on the vehicle, which is understood to be used by cameramen to shoot a medieval drama, and attempted to make his escape – only to find that it was so advanced he couldn’t drive it.

After a member of the crew heard the buggy being operated, they went to investigate and saw the culprit struggling to drive the machine, which is believed to only travel at slow speeds anyway.

The man was chased from the scene and the £17,000 vehicle was recovered without any damage.

Police are, however, attempting to trace the man responsible, and they are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Glasgow-based production company Cut Media have been on location at the country park all week shooting scenes for a mystery TV project – with staff there remaining tight-lipped as to the identity of the show.

They are expected to remain on-site until the close of play today (Friday).

Their latest works include a project for Red Bull with famed trails cyclist Danny MacAskill and a film for a new Adidas outdoors campaign, made in locations including China, the US and Africa.

Clients include SKY, Channel 4, the BBC, British Cycling and Visit Scotland while they also filmed promotional pieces during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

They describe themselves as a fusion between a “creative agency and video production company” and claim that their films have been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube.

Anyone with information on this attempted theft can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
