Runners bring in £23k for hospice
The Stirling Scottish Marathon proved to be a big winner for Strathcarron Hospice.
The hospice had around 100 people running in the event on their behalf and funds have been rolling in - with £23,000 raised so far .... and counting. A supporters bus for volunteers and those cheering on the charity’s runners was also donated for the day, helping to ensure the participants had plenty of encouragement from loved ones and wellwishers. Strathcarron business development manager Claire McDonald said: “So far our runners have raised over £23,000 which is absolutely incredibly particularly when you think that is already enough to cover two days of hospice care at Strathcarron. “It was such an amazing day and we are just in awe of their efforts.”
Coleena Brodie of Strathcarron’s fundraising department said: “Our runners have been pushing themselves to the absolute extremes of their endurance to complete this marathon after a year of tough training in all weathers and we really wanted them to have as much support as we could muster.
“Each and every one of them were running to raise funds to support our specialist palliative care services and help us to make every moment count for our patients and their families - with over £11,000 to raise every single day, every penny really does count.”
Many of the marathon runners are now planning to take part in the forthcoming Strathcarron Hospice 10K.
While the event usually takes place in Denny, this year marks its first year taking place in the picturesque grounds of the Stirling University campus, on October 15.
Coleena added: “Anyone who has been inspired by our marathon runners can take part in the 10K. While a full marathon may not be for them, a fabulous 10K race at the university will help us celebrate 30 years of the Strathcarron 10K Race. You can even buy your own ‘teamstrathcarron’ running vest when you sign up at www.strathcarronhospice. net. For the first time ever we also have a 2.5K Young Runners fun run for the under 15s, so there really is something for everyone.”
“For the moment, however, we would like to say that the Stirling marathon and everyone who took part was just amazing. A huge thank you to all the communities, runners, supporters, spectators, fundraisers and volunteers who were involved in our first Stirling marathon.”
