Danger crossing is replaced by bridge

Millhall safety improvement

- Chris Marzella

A new rail crossing at Millhall has opened to the public.

The crossing, near Caledonian Marts saw the its first footfall on Sunday.

Network Rail replaced the Millhall Road existing level crossing as part of plans to electrify the line through Stirling.

The old level crossing was classed as one of the most dangerous in Scotland — with one fatal accident and six near misses since 2010.

A range of alternatives to improve safety at the crossing were investigated and it was determined that the footbridge was the best solution for the location.

The new structure is fullyaccessible and includes ramps with resting points, as well as steps.

Residents were kept informed of the work with an information session held last year. A Network Rail spokesman said: “The new footbridge will improve both pedestrian and rail safety and we are pleased to have delivered the structure ahead of schedule.

“Millhall Road crossing was one of Scotland’s highest risk pedestrian level crossings — with a history of near miss and fatal incidents – and its removal is part of our Scotland-wide strategy to close level crossings where we can.”

Stirling East councillor Chris Kane said: “Given the accident record at the level crossing, building a bridge was a sensible option.

“Network Rail worked closely with the community and the new bridge, with both stairs and a ramp, will ensure that people with reduced mobility, wheelchairs, prams or bikes will be able to cross the railway safely for many years to come.

“Another welcome benefit is that trains will no longer have to sound their horns on approach, bringing a bit of peace and quiet to nearby residents.”

Stirling Council approved the plans for the bridge in July 2016.

The line carries both passenger and freight trains and has a capacity up to 100mph.

Proposals to close the main level crossing in Cornton were deferred in February for a hearing at a future Stirling Council planning panel.

The level crossing which the footbridge is replacing at Millhall is the first public level crossing to close in Scotland for five years.
