Stirling athletes scoop medals

Stirling triathlete­s were to the fore at the weekend at the Scottish National Aquathlon Championsh­ips.

Hosted by Lomond Swimming and Triathlon Club, the event was part of the Beastie Triathlon Festival at Balloch Castle on Loch Lomond.

Stirling University brothers Douglas and Fergus Roberts were among the favourites in the men’s race while in the ladies event, former student Natalie Milne, current Stirling University Triathlon Club member Julie Nimmo and Stirling Triathlon Club’s Cliona Ferguson were all vying for the title.

The 750m swim saw Douglas Roberts exit first in 9:01, followed by Lewis Strachan (Pro Endurance), in 9:36, just three seconds ahead of Fergus Roberts.

Douglas Roberts held his lead around the two lap 5km course, thundering across the line in a time of 26:28 (run time 17:03).

His brother Fergus had the fastest run of the race, to finish second in a time of 26:55 (run time 16:38). Strachan was third in 28:58 (run time 18:54).

In the women’s race, Milne and Nimmo swum neck and neck, with the former taking the edge and exiting the swim in 10:03.

As she charged to transition, Nimmo was one second behind with Becky Storrie (Triathlon England and Manx Triathlon Club) third in 10:44 and Cliona Ferguson fourth

Milne then ran home in 19:37 for an overall time of 30:12 and her fourth Scottish Aquathlon Championsh­ips victory.

Second place overall was Storrie in 31:24 and third was Nimmo in 31:44.
