FOUR-HOUR HOUSE SIEGE

Woman held after fire

- Robert Fairnie

Emergency services last weekend responded to a fourhour siege at a house which was set on fire.

Police officers alerted to reports of a disturbance at a property in Quakerfield, Bannockburn, were allegedly met with resistance when they arrived on the scene around 10.30pm Friday.

They are said to have remained there for around four hours to deal with the incident.

After arriving they found a person within the property had barricaded themselves inside, and was making violent threats towards officers. As a result police negotiators were called.

The Observer understands a fire was then started within the property and crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the address to assist police.

After flames were put out police were able to gain access to the building and an arrest was made.

People living in the area described seeing up to six or seven police cars out on the main road, at a property next to Our Lady and St Ninians Church.

A worker at a takeaway, open late in the area, said they were inundated with queries from customers as to what was going on – with residents seemingly baffled by the police presence.

One woman living nearby, who asked not to be named, said police vehicles lined the street on Friday

evening – and remained there until well after 2am.

She said: “There were police there all night. Patrol cars were parked all along the street and a fire engine, too. We could also see there was a police dog being used.

“I was up late anyway but there were police here until around 2.30am. It’s always surprising to see something like that so close to your own home. Nobody around here really knows what had happened, and we’re not too sure what the house is used for. There seems to be different people living in there all the time.”

A 30-year-old woman was scheduled to appear at Stirling Sheriff Court this week in connection with an incident in Bannockburn.
