Village stalwart Peter passes away aged 67
Former Cambusbarron Community Council chairman Peter Paterson died last week at Strathcarron Hospice after a long battle against illness.
Mr Paterson, who was 67, was well known both in Cambusbarron, where he grew up, and as a teacher at St Modan’s High, where he was principal teacher of English for most of his 38 years there.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Janice and sons Ian and Steven, former MP for Stirling.
In March last year Mr Paterson was awarded a high commendation in the Scottish Civic Trust My Place Awards, which honour those who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.
He was a founding member of Cambusbarron Community Council and published three books about the village: ‘Bygone Days in Cambusbarron’ (1993), ‘Elephant in the Sky’ (1998) and ‘A Cambusbarron Tapestry’ (2011).
As community council chairman he led a number of campaigns, including the successful bid to prevent further quarrying at Gillies Hill.
He also fought to have the memorial erected at Bruce’s Well, where Robert the Bruce is said to have prayed before the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Mr Paterson’s funeral will take place at 10.30am on August 18 at Bruce Memorial Church, Cambusbarron, and thereafter to Falkirk Crematorium.
A full obituary will appear in next Wednesday’s Observer.
