MP welcomes move to ban‘microbeads’
Stirling MP Stephen Kerr has welcomed a move to ban‘microbeads’in a bid to clean up the world’s oceans.
The UK Government recently proposed the strongest ever ban on microbeads in the world to date, with the Environment Secretary Michael Gove pledging action to reduce plastic waste in the oceans.
Mr Kerr said:“I am absolutely delighted the Government has taken this significant step in banning the use of these harmful products. The amount of microbeads released into our oceans is truly staggering and the evidence is undeniable that they are causing long term damage to our environment.
“This is the most important action taken so far by any Government in the world and clearly establishes this country’s determination to take a leading role in environmental protection. I also welcome the news that the ban could be extended even further and that there is promised more initiatives to combat waste, littering and other plastic products entering our oceans.”
Michael Gove confirmed that legislation will be introduced this year to ban the sale and manufacture of microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products.
Greenpeace UK oceans campaigner Louisa Casson said:“This is great news for our environment and a positive sign of Britain’s global leadership on ocean plastics. It’s crucial that ministers have left the door open to broadening the ban in future.”
