Louise is ready to run through pain barrier

Mum’s the word in build-up for 10k event

- Chris Marzella

A woman with a painful foot condition is tackling the Great Scottish Run 10k.

Louise Young (37) is bidding to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

The mum of three has set herself the goal of raising £500 for the group after her mother, Carol, was diagnosed with the disease several years.

As difficult a challenge as completing the course will be, it will prove to be doubly hard for Alva woman Louise, who suffers from plantar fasciitis – a condition that affects the heel.

Louise is now willing to push through the pain barrier in an attempt to raise funds for the charity.

She said: “It’s supposed to be a 10k run, but with the problems I have with my feet I’d be happy to run or even just walk, but I’ll get to the finish one way or another.

“Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the heel and it can get really sore.

“I’ve wanted to do something to raise funds for a while and I decided I’d do the Great Scottish Run 10k.”

Louise will tackle the six mile course alongside her sister-inlaw, Sabrina Young, from Airdrie.

Louise added: “Neither of us is the fittest and I just thought that the half marathon may have been a bit too much.

“I have been going on walks locally, doing the six miles and I’ve been walking up a few hills, so hopefully that will build the fitness up for the 10k.”

The Great Scottish Run takes place in Glasgow on Sunday October 1.

Parkinson’s has left Louise’s 60year old mum, Carol, with mobility issues.

She added: “People relate Parkinson’s to just shaking of the hands and things like that, but there’s much more to it than that. Mum struggles to walk, so even things like walking to the shops is hard.”

Louise will be cheered on from the sidelines by her three children – Matthew (10), Michael (5) and Charlotte (2).

She is accepting donations through a sponsor sheet or online through a Just Giving page.
