Pupils shine in shoe collection

-

Kind-hearted pupils from Beaconhurst School have handed over scores of pairs of shoes for a Unicef campaign.

The independent Bridge of Allan school’s PTA organised an end-of-term shoe collection in a bid to help Unicef ’s ShoeShare initiative which supports educational programmes around the world.

A total of 279 pairs of school shoes, trainers and other outgrown footwear were collected following the appeal organised by PTA chair Dawn Keith.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the response to the appeal which was a good way for Beaconhurst pupils to help children who are not as fortunate as themselves.

“The shoes are recycled and the funds raised are used to provide educational equipment for schools.

“This was a great opportunity for our children to recognise that not everyone has the same chances in life and to do what they can to try and improve other children’s experiences.”

The Unicef programme, which is run in conjunction with shoe retailer Clarks, helps change vulnerable children’s lives by buying educational equipment such as the School in a Box resource.

The School in a Box initiative aims to transform any space into a learning area with enough resources to educate 40 children allowing them the chance to learn, no matter where they are or what disaster has struck.

As well as providing basic resources such as pens and pencils, the scheme also supports the training of teachers and works with governments to improve educational standards and ensure children leave school able to read and write.

Beaconhurst headteacher Sandra Bannerman said: “We are delighted to support this essential and worthwhile Unicef initiative and do whatever we can to ensure children around the world get the kind of access to education which every child deserves.”
