Muddy good hen party

- Donald Morton

Dawn Evans’ hen party with a difference saw her friends join in the Lanrick Challenge on Saturday, raising more than £1000 for charity.

Cambusbarron bride-tobe Dawn Evans had a hen party with a difference at the weekend.

The 29 year-old, who works as a fitness instructor at Stirling Sports Village, didn’t hit the high spots of Europe like many others.

Instead she persuaded her pals to tackle the Lanrick Challenge- the ultimate test in strength, endurance and determination featuring a 48-obstacle set-up by the Marines.

And Team Evans have so far managed to raise more than £1000 for two charities - Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) and the Sandpiper Trust.

The challenge at the Lanrick Estate near Doune is a 12km or 6km adventure including mud ponds, log piles, cargo nets, river crossings, tree climbs, monkey bars and a 30-metre water slide to finish.

Dawn, who completed the challenge while wearing a wedding dress, said she had done the 12km run a couple of years ago and wanted to do it again.

“A lot of hen parties are abroad and a lot of money is spent but I wanted to do something completely different.

“When I suggested it to my friends, some of them weren’t keen but they all loved it and we laughed from start to finish.”

Dawn and her fiance Andrew Ferguson (31) will wed on September 9 at St Mary’s RC Church in Stirling.

And she’s hoping her big day won’t see her wedding dress in the same state as Saturday’s effort.

“I didn’t realise how heavy it would be,” she said. “At one part I had to swim in it - I think it weighed about a an extra stone!”

The Lanrick Challenge was first run in 2014, organised by the founders of the Sandpiper Trust Penny and Aly Dickson who set up the charity in memory of their son Sandy who died in a drowning accident in 2000 aged 14.

The charity aims to improve emergency care in remote areas while supplying medical teams with life-saving equipment.
