Home advantage gains top Fifteen title

Polmaise bowlers struck top form on Sunday to regain the City of Stirling Top Fifteen trophy.

Playing on home turf, Polmaise, who last held the title in 2015, coasted to a convincing 12-0 victory over Cambusbarr­on.

Both singles matches were closely contested with Gary Brown seeing off Calum Musik 21-13 in the junior event while Gary Malcolmson survived a stiff test from Bill Brown before winning 21-18.

In the pairs Donald Dalgliesh and Danny McCormick got the better of John Chalmers and David Ferguson sen by a 16-10 scoreline.

Triples James Wray, James Brown and John Johnstone carded a 17-13 win over Chris Green, Kieron Whitton and Stephen Whitton.

Also winning were the Polmaise fours – Alec McNeil, Kevin Paterson, Robert Johnstone and David McEwan who triumphed 23-16 over Aaron Coyle, Spencer Archibald, Darren Liddell and David Ferguson jun.

Completing the winning line up were seniors Jim Walker, Peter Smith, John Binnie and Peter Black who finished 1512 ahead of Willie Horsburgh, George Allan, John Bissett and John Ferguson.

Final totals were: Polmaise 12 plus 113, Cambusbarr­on 0 plus 82.

The popular annual competitio­n was generously sponsored by Co-operative Funeralcar­e and by J&W Builders Ltd.

Anyone who may be interested in taking up indoor bowls has the opportunit­y to give it a try at a series of open evenings.

Stirling Indoor BC in Forth Street will be staging the evenings from Monday, August 28 to Friday, September 1, from 6-8.30pm. Bowls will be available.

Contact John Millar 07709 058642 or johntmilla­r@ aol.co.uk Bridge of Allan Last Wednesday a gents Stableford was held which Willie Millar won on the day with his score of 20 points just beating David Anderson and Stuart McLachlan. On Friday, the gents team travelled to Muckhart Golf Club for the annual Willie Russell outing and despite some terrible weather all enjoyed a good day. Winner with a combined score of 56 points was Ricky McConnell and in second place was Raymond Aimer with 50 points. Kevin Allan was third on 48 points. Back at home the Friday Senior Stableford was also being played and David Anderson took advantage of excellent course conditions winning on a countback from Stuart Kerr with 19 points. Third was Ian Ainsworth with 16 points. The fourth round of the Strokeplay Shield took place on Saturday and in the day’s competitio­n John Milne won with an excellent net 63 just pipping Stephen Brown on a countback. Raymond Aimer kept up his fine Friday form claiming third place with his net 64. Stephen Brown had the best gross score on the day with his 68. The Strokeplay Shield itself was won by Jim Black who returned the best three scores from the four qualifying rounds with his 198 total. Second and third respective­ly on 200 were Robert Birrell and Keith Bath. In Sunday’s nine-hole Stableford winner was George Forbes with his 17 points return. Gents are reminded that the Rising Sun Open is being held on Saturday, August 26 so those that have not yet entered can do so via the noticeboar­d or website.

Stirling More than 200 players competed last Friday and Saturday in the John Begg Trophy. Saturday players enjoyed the far better dry warm weather and this was reflected with all nine prizewinne­rs playing on Saturday. Kenny McLean returned a net 65 for a slim one-shot victory over John Murray and Jamie Devaney. This was Kenny’s first silverware at the club after eight years as a member. His round was built on the foundation of a great front nine of one over par 37 including a birdie at the 6th. Jamie Devaney was second in Class 2 on net 66 and Alex Hogg was third on net 67. Neil Malone won Class 3 on net 68 after a disappoint­ing 7, 5, 7 start. Andrew Hislop was second on net 69, beating James McIntosh on the bih. John Murray won Class 1 on net 66 playing off 9 in nines of 36 and 39. Grant McBeath was second and John Johnstone was third. John will contest the final of Nimmo Cup against scratch player David Oates this week. Ben Liddell returned the best scratch score with a level par 72. Brendan Watt and club champion runner up Allan Watson will play club champion Liam Haldane and James Todd jnr in the final of the Club Foursomes and Peter McGuigan will play Kevin Cunningham in the final of the Captain’s Prize. Stirling will host the annual match against St Andrews Golf Club on Sunday for the Jubilee Trophy - presented by the late John L Clink. This is the 40th anniversar­y of the match and St Andrews bring a strong team to try and regain the trophy which includes four players all on plus handicaps. Results: John Begg Trophy (August 11-12). Stirling Seniors Stirling gents seniors played their last home match of the 2017 Central and Lothians Seniors League on Monday against Newbattle Golf Club. The match was played in wet conditions but the excellent standard of the course resulted in the games not being adversely affected. Stirling played well overall and won by 5½-½. Match results were: Jim Fisher and Bruce Hunter halved; Stuart Brown and Frank Gordon won 6&4; Peter McGuigan and George Clelland won 7&6; Colin Peebles and Colin Griffin won 9&8; John Cattigan and Bob Motel won 4&3; Ian Cockshoot and Steve Hanson won 4&3.

Dunblane New In the first round of the WC Jug, Alex Wilson (11), who donated the trophy along with John Connolly, returned the best score of the day (63) to win the First Class. Having started with a double bogey Alex birdied the 4th but dropped four other shots on the outward nine. However a level par inward nine with birdies at 11 and 14 set him up for the second round next weekend. Runner-up in the class was Alan Mackie (10) on 66 and third went to Peter Bell (11) on 67 and better inward half than Ian Matthewson (6). Second Class was won by Gerry Watt (12) on 67 with club chairman Roddy Morrison (16) second on 68. Three players then returned 69 but third place with bih went to Bill Begg (16) than Ian Kenny (13) and Alan Thomson (13). Three players returned 69 in the Third Class but the honours went to Gary Aitken (17) with a better last six than James Comrie (17), who had bih than Ian Docherty (20). Fourth place went to Peter Gittins (21) on 70. In the Scratch Class there were three 72s but the winner was Ken Wilkie with better last six than Alan Lockhart who had bih than Cameron Buist. Colin Graham had a hole in one at the 14th . On Sunday some of the juniors paired up with a lady member to play in the Monty Trophy Greensomes. Winners on 38 points were Amy Thomson and Jude Neville. Runners up were Jan Higgins and Cameron Gordon on 36 points and bih than Doris Dunn and Cameron Henderson who in turn had BIH than Maggie Gardner and Ruairidh Scullion.
