A Smith double makes it two wins out of two

Stirling Albion .............. 4 Berwick Rangers .......... 0 A Darren Smith double helped fire Stirling Albion to the top of the Ladbrokes League 2 table as they cruised to victory against Berwick.

It is, of course, early days but it’s been an ideal start to the season for Dave Mackay’s men who followed up the opening-day success at Stenhousem­uir with a convincing win here.

They lead title favourites Peterhead on goal difference and travel to Balmoor at the end of the month but entertain Edinburgh City at Forthbank this weekend.

It is the first time since 2013/14 that the Binos have won their first two league games of the season but back then they lost their third match to East Stirlingsh­ire.

Stirling, who were at home to Montrose in the IRN-BRU Cup first round last night (Tuesday), won on Saturday despite not being at their very best.

John Coughlin’s men enjoyed some good spells of possession and carved out some decent chances but too many of them were off target and Cammy Binnie had a quiet afternoon.

For all that Albion were a bit sloppy after going 2-0 up, they could, and probably should, have scored more goals. They looked a threat going forward all afternoon, with Callumn Morrison, Darren Smith, Ross Kavanagh and Peter MacDonald almost acting as a front four.

Smith now has four goals to his credit this season and Kavanagh took his tally to three early in the second half. The last of the afternoon came 12 minutes from time and was initially awarded to Ross Smith but it
