MSP’s Autism Hour support call

-

Stirling MSP Bruce Crawford has called for local shops in the Stirling area to take part in Autism Hour.

The inaugural event, organised by the National Autistic Society, will see shops and services across the country dim their lights, turn down music and share information about autism for 60 minutes on the week of October 2.

Autistic people see, hear and feel the world in a different, often more intense way to other people. They can find social situations difficult and struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, making them feel overwhelmed by ‘too much information’ when out in public.

A recent survey by the charity found that 66 per cent of people with autism feel socially isolated, and 44 per cent sometimes avoid going out because they are worried about how people react to them.

Mr Crawford said: “Many of us take a trip to the shops for granted but for autistic people it can often be a difficult, daunting and overwhelming experience. This initiative from the National Autistic Society Scotland will give local businesses an opportunity to train themselves and teach members of the public about inclusive conduct on the high street.

“I would urge all local shops and services to consider how they can take part in Autism Hour.”

Businesses can sign up for Autism Hour and download a free information pack at autism.org.uk/get-involved/ tmi/autism-hour.aspx.
