Concert On Sunday, September 17 at 3pm in St Mary’s Scottish Episcopal Church, there is a concert by Alastair Savage and Friends featuring Alastair on fiddle, Iain Crawford (double bass); Eddie McGuire (flute) and Ewan Robertson (whistle and piccolo). This will be an hour long concert of Scottish music old and new focusing on music from Alastair’s unaccompan­ied fiddle album released last year. Heritage Society There will be a one hour guided walk exploring the history of Balfron Kirkyard on Friday, September 8. It will begin at the Clachan Oak at 2pm. Golf society The most recent outing took place at Niddry Castle Golf Club in West Lothian at the end of August. Playing in extremely windy conditions proved a real test to the members, however despite this there were still some good scores recorded. Playing to three-quarter handicaps, David Brown emerged as the winner of the Pirie Trophy with a Stableford score of 35 points with Steve Messenger runner up on 32 points and Raymond Ainslie third with 27 points. Raymond also won the prize for Nearest the Pin. With no Magic Twos scored again the prize for this carries over to the first outing of 2018. The next event is the Andy McAllister Trophy which as usual will be played at Aberfoyle on Saturday, September 30 with all proceeds raised on the day being donated to Cancer Research. Church At the second joint Norrieston/Kippen service last Sunday, Rev Ellen Larson Davidson led a celebratio­n for the baptism of Rosemary Cecil Marie Dean, infant daughter of Len and Amy Dean, The Acres. Watching with interest were the baby’s siblings, Martha, Tilly and Jake. Rosie was Christened by her grandfathe­r, Rev Sam Ashton, a retired vicar of the Church of England. On Sunday the time of the service returns to 11.15am and will be conducted by Rev Andy Campbell. Being the first Sunday of the month there will be a Traidcraft stall after the service. Badminton Weekly sessions from 7.30pm to 9.30pm begin in the village hall on Tuesday, September 5. This long establishe­d club welcomes new members. Primary School School opened last week after the summer holidays with 13 new pupils starting in P1 and an older pupil joining P3. This brings the school roll to 107 pupils and five teachers on the staff. On Wednes- day afternoon all pupils attended a musical performanc­e by Hopscotch Theatre in the village hall. The senior pupils residentia­l trip to Lendrick Muir is on September 12-15. Woodland Group Anyone interested in helping to care for the community Burnside Wood should join the group at 10am on Sunday on the Sports Field. Regular meetings are held on the first Sunday morning of each month. Open Doors In conjunctio­n with the National Open Doors event, Kippen Heritage Trail will steward the Smiddy at the Cross and the Boatyard on Saturday and Sunday, September 16 and 17. Bowling In Monday evening’s rink game, points were gained by Willie Mills, Jay McDonald, Sandra Anderson, Donald Smith and Max Taylor. The Jack Hay Mixed Triples competitio­n was enjoyed in fine weather last Sunday. It was won by Rachel Baxter, Richard Milne and Gordon Baxter of Vale of Leven Bowling Club. Carol Bryden, Helen Horne and Brian Thomson of Grangemout­h Railway Bowling Club were runners-up. On Sunday, the last club competitio­n of the season, The McLaren Trophy, takes place and members are asked to arrive promptly for a 1.30pm start.
