Swedish Green Party man back to old university

- Robert Fairnie

A Swedish politician who spent time studying at the University of Stirling returned to his old haunting ground to chat to a new batch of EU students last week.

Per Bolund, who represents the Green Party at the Swedish Riksdag, made his way to the university with Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Mark Ruskell last week.

Mr Bolund took the time to chat to students about his time studying in the city along with his work as a minister of the Swedish Government.

The Minister for Financial Markets and Consumer Affairs was in Scotland to attend the Scottish Greens’National Conference in Edinburgh and an international conference in Glasgow on inclusive economic growth.

He studied an MSc in environmental science and biology at the university, benefiting from the ERASMUS exchange programme in the early 1990s.

And he said:“Being back at the university felt a lot like coming home. I really enjoyed my experience as a student in Stirling and this is also where I first became interested in the Green movement.

“I want to encourage other students to take the opportunity to study abroad if they get the chance”

Mr Ruskell joined Mr Bolund on his visit and he said:“I was delighted to welcome Per back to Stirling. It turns out we studied at a similar time at the uni in the 90s and both have fond memories of just how welcoming and inspiring a place to study it was.

“International students and academics have an important role to play in the city’s growing economic success story. It’s vital we can continue to welcome them for decades to come.”
