Tributes to Pte Aitken, who died of wounds

Tributes were paid in Killearn to a 19-year-old villager who died in the latest fighting.

Pte Walter Gordon Aitken, Scottish Rifles, was killed in action on September 23, 1917. He was the youngest son of Mrs Thomas Smith, Townfoot, Killearn, and had a brother, James, serving with the Motor Transport Service.

Pte Aitken had been in France for more than 14 months and was previously wounded in April, 1917.

Announcing his death in a service at Killearn Parish Church, minister Rev Dr Gordon Mitchell said the young man was universall­y respected for his good sense, kindness and integrity.
