City to play its part in youth film festival

- Robert Fairnie

Events will be running in the Stirling area next month as part of one of the world’s biggest youth film festivals.

Young people aged from five to 19 are being given the chance to attend a number of special free screenings at the Macrobert Arts Centre and at the Vue cinema when the Into Film Festival comes to town between November 8 and 24.

Cartoons, classics and current blockbusters are among the films on offer, and schools, colleges and youth leaders are invited to get involved.

Animation Wallace and Gromit The Curse of the Were Rabbit will be showing at the Macrobert on Friday November 10 before audiences have the chance to tune in to ‘90s drama Ratcatcher at the same venue on Monday, November 20.

Also among the movies on offer are J K Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, at the Vue on Wednesday, November 15, and Smurfs: The Lost Village which will be screening two days later.

There will be more than 280 free events taking place at venues across the country as part of the festival – with help of funding from Cinema First and support from the British Film Institute through lottery funding.

Organisers hope the festival will give young people the chance to take in some classics and hidden gems which address issues such as immigration, bullying, war and the environment.

Last year more than 47,000 educators and young people across Scotland engaged with the festival and in a survey of teachers around 94 per cent said the activities were useful in helping to deliver the curriculum.

And 82 per cent said that the festival has made them more likely to visit the cinema to support the delivery of the curriculum.
