MP Kerr calls for measures to protect whisky industry

- Robert Fairnie

Stirling MP Stephen Kerr is calling for new measures to be introduced to support the whisky industry.

The Conservative politician is pushing for a reduction on spirit duty and a freeze on beer duty which, he says, will boost the local whisky industry and pub trade.

The UK Chancellor announced last year a freeze on beer duty after a campaign from CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) found that the effects of the beer duty escalator from 2008 to 2013 may have contributed to thousands of pub closures and job losses.

After visiting Glengoyne Highland Whisky Distillery and meeting financial director Mike Younger, Mr Kerr was told about future opportunities and challenges facing the industry with Brexit looming.

He said:“It was brilliant to see our world-beating whisky industry up close and gain a better understanding of the process that produces this high quality Scottish product.

“The Glengoyne Distillery is one of the leading whisky distillers in the country and part of the wider network that represent us so well in export markets.

“I want to see the government do as much as possible to help the industry. That’s why I am seeking a reduction in spirit duty, as spirits are liable for spirit duty as soon as they’ve been manufactured.

“This means that a reduction in spirit duty will encourage our distillers to boost production for export, at a time when we are looking outwards with promising trade deals on the horizon.”

He added:“I also want to see a continued freeze on beer duty to help our pubs stay in business.”
