Brexit report is another re-run of Project Fear

-

Dear Editor

The headline‘Brexit could cost us £520m’(Observer, November 1) was certainly compelling, that is until I saw it referred to a report produced by the London School of Economics. The LSE is well known for its leftwing agenda and so its views on Brexit are entirely predictable.

The LSE’s report reminded me of the shameful‘Project Fear’ campaign launched by then Prime Minister David Cameron (and funded at taxpayers’expense) prior to the Brexit referendum in 2016. Chancellor George Osborne and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney prophesised financial chaos, mass unemployment and collapse of the British economy if we left the EU.

Bizarrely David Cameron even warned that our leaving the EU could trigger the break up of NATO (which has nothing to do with the EU) and might even lead to war in Europe!

Needless to say, none of these preposterous predictions has come to pass and the British economy is stronger that it has been in years. And that is despite persistent scaremongering by the establishment elite with a vested interest in the Brussels gravy train and its unelected, sclerotic and corrupt bureaucracy.

Figures published this week by the Office for National Statistics reported that sales of British goods and services to non - EU nations rose by 8.3% last year, an increase of £311.6 billion, while exports to the EU rose by just 2.8%, the eighth straight year our exports to USA, Canada, Japan, the Middle East and elsewhere outstripped those to the EU.
