Scholarships Talented athletes are being invited to apply for sports scholarships at Beaconhurst School. The independent Bridge of Allan school is hosting its first Sports Scholarship Recruitment Day early next year to assess pupils and give them the chance to find out more about the programme. The school has performance programmes in place for golf, triathlon, tennis and swimming and offers scholarships to pupils who excel in these fields. They benefit from a tailored plan which combines academic studies with coaching in their chosen sport. Director of sport Judith Graham said: “We want to be proactive and find out about talented athletes in the area who can benefit from our sports scholarship programmes. This is a great opportunity for pupils to come along, meet our coaching team and hear more about our programmes.” The event will take place on Thursday, January 25 and applications are invited now from pupils who will be going into P6-S6 in August 2018. Successful applicants and their parents will be invited to the session which includes the chance to meet coaches, try out for selection and find out more about the school’s sporting pathways. Mrs Graham said: “Pupils will have the chance to show us their talents on the tennis courts, at the golf hub or on the athletics track and we’re really looking forward to meeting some talented athletes from across Central Scotland. If successful, they’ll benefit from our bespoke programme of coaching and studying which fits into the school day. “And going into the future, there are lots of pathways our scholars take – some are aspiring sports stars who go into professional sport as a career while others take a route into coaching and combine that with high-level competition.” Headteacher Sandra Bannerman said: “Scholarship is an acknowledgement of excellence and the awards give talented children an opportunity to discover and develop their sporting potential alongside an excellent education.” A limited number of scholarships are available in each of the school’s four beacon sports tennis, golf, triathlon and swimming. Anyone interested in applying for a scholarship, which can cut school fees by up to 50 per cent, should contact the school for an application form and information pack. Top of the Bench On Thursday November 23, four of our pupils took part in the regional Top of the Bench Chemistry Competition at Forth Valley College in Falkirk. Olly Ferguson (S4), Lucy Blenkharn (S3), Amber Morrison (S3) and Yusuf Kurt (S2) made up the team that took on nine other schools from the surrounding area. The objective of the competition was to work as a team to complete an experiment and it’s write up in an allotted amount of time before a demonstration to a set judge. Points were awarded to the team for aspects such as safety in the lab, teamwork, presentation of results, graph, etc and the team did very well in all areas of their lab work. The group came third in the competition (narrowly missing out on the top spot by two marks) winning prizes for themselves and money for the school. Well done everyone.
